Splendor Duel
Splendor rebuilt for exactly two, with a single shared grid of gems you both draw from. It keeps the half hour and adds the direct competition the original never had at two players.

Games we claim to have play-tested: 0. Every gift guide in this category implies a shelf of played games behind it. We do not have one, and we would rather say so. What we do instead is on this page: the publisher’s own player count, playing time and age band for every pick, cited to the publisher; a live price rather than a remembered one; and a plain answer on who should skip each game.
The short answer
Splendor Duel is a two-player card-buying game. Space Cowboys states 2 players, ages 10+, 30 minutes. On your turn you do exactly one thing - collect up to three tokens, buy a jewel card and resolve its effect, or reserve a card and take a gold token - and you win by reaching any one of three victory conditions first.
What it actually is
Space Cowboys frames it as two jewel guild masters in the Renaissance crafting jewelry for monarchs. Mechanically, a shared board holds gem tokens and rows of jewel cards, and the cards you buy make later cards cheaper - the engine that gave the original Splendor its name.
The publisher lists the three things you can do on a turn: collect up to three tokens, purchase a jewel card and resolve its effects, or reserve a jewel card and take a gold token. One action, then your opponent goes. There is no hand management beyond the cards you have reserved and no hidden information to speak of.
Where it separates from the original is the shared grid. Both players draw from the same small supply of tokens, so what you take is also what your opponent no longer has - and the publisher states three separate victory conditions, involving royal favors, privileges, and prestige accumulated through gems and pearls. Reaching any one of them ends the game immediately.

Three ways to win is what makes it a duel
In a two-player game with a single victory condition, both players spend the whole game running the same race. Splendor Duel does not work like that: with three separate routes to victory, you can be ahead on one while your opponent is quietly closing on another.
That is the practical difference from the original Splendor at two players, which is a pleasant parallel engine-building exercise where interference is mostly accidental. Here the interference is the point, and if you were lukewarm on Splendor with two people, this is the version that fixes it.
What is good about it
- Every gem you take is one your opponent cannot - the direct competition the original lacked at two
- Three separate win conditions keep games from settling into the same shape
- Thirty minutes on the publisher’s clock, so it fits a weeknight
- One action per turn means turns are short and the game never stalls
- Very little text on the components, so the rules are mostly demonstrated rather than read
What is not
- More rules than plain Splendor, which makes it a worse choice as somebody’s first-ever board game
- Two players only, with no variant in the box
- Owners of Splendor can reasonably feel they are buying the same game twice
- The three win conditions take a game or two to internalize, and the first one is spent learning them
- Abstract underneath - the Renaissance jewelers are decoration on a maths puzzle
Who should skip it
Anyone buying a first board game. Space Cowboys states 10+ and the rules are not hard, but there is more to absorb here than in the original. Plain Splendor or Jaipur get a new player to the fun faster.
Households that are ever three or more. This is a strictly two-player box. If the count fluctuates, the original Splendor covers 2-4 and is the safer purchase.
Players who want theme. There is none to speak of. If what makes a game land for your household is story and setting, Wingspan or Ticket to Ride will do far more for you.
How it compares to the other two-player games we cover
Against 7 Wonders Duel (Repos Production: 2 players, 10+, 30 minutes), Duel is the more dramatic game - it can end suddenly on military or scientific supremacy - and Splendor Duel is the tighter, more arithmetic one.
Against Jaipur (Space Cowboys: 2 players, 10+, 30 minutes), from the same publisher, Jaipur is much easier to teach and Splendor Duel has more to think about. Our Jaipur review is the other side of that choice.
Against Patchwork (Lookout Games: 2 players, 8+, approx. 30 minutes), Patchwork has the lower stated age and almost no direct conflict. Splendor Duel is the one to buy if the complaint about two-player games is that nobody can do anything to anybody.
What it costs
Splendor Duel sits in the middle of the two-player range - more than a card game in a tin, less than a big box - and the components are the usual Space Cowboys standard. We never print a remembered price anywhere on this site: the button above shows a live figure when we hold one and says so plainly when we do not. Our two-player page places it against the rest of the field.
What we would buy for this

Gift fit 8.5 / 10. That is our editorial judgment of how safe and well-aimed this is as a present, read off the published specifications - not a verdict on how good the game is, and not a test result. It is deliberately not marked up as a rating in this page’s structured data. How we pick.
How these were picked
We have not played these games and we do not pretend to have. What we did was read each publisher’s own page, take their stated player count, playing time and age band, check that every pick genuinely fits the constraint in this page’s title, confirm it is still being sold, and pull a live price rather than a remembered one. Every figure here names the publisher it came from, so you can check it yourself in about a minute.
How we pick sets out the full method, including what would change a ranking.
Questions people ask
+−Do you need Splendor to play Splendor Duel?
No. Splendor Duel is a standalone game designed for exactly two players, not an expansion. Space Cowboys states 2 players for it and 2-4 for the original.
+−How do you win Splendor Duel?
Space Cowboys states three victory conditions - involving royal favors, privileges, and prestige accumulated through gems and pearls - and reaching any one of them first wins the game. That is the main structural difference from the original.
+−Is Splendor Duel better than Splendor for two players?
For two people specifically, yes - it was designed for that count, and both players draw from one shared supply, so taking a gem denies it to your opponent. Splendor at two is a gentler, more parallel game.
+−How long does Splendor Duel take?
Space Cowboys states 30 minutes, the same figure as the original. One action per turn keeps it moving; a first game runs longer while the three win conditions sink in.
+−What age is Splendor Duel for?
Space Cowboys states 10+. There is very little text on the components, so the floor is about planning several turns ahead rather than reading. Publisher-stated ages for everything we cover are on our age guide.
