7 Wonders Duel

A complete civilization game for exactly two people in half an hour. It was built for two rather than trimmed down to two, and the difference is the whole point.

How this page is funded: the buy links below are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change the order of the picks or what we say about them. Full disclosure.

Games we claim to have play-tested: 0. Every gift guide in this category implies a shelf of played games behind it. We do not have one, and we would rather say so. What we do instead is on this page: the publisher’s own player count, playing time and age band for every pick, cited to the publisher; a live price rather than a remembered one; and a plain answer on who should skip each game.

The short answer

7 Wonders Duel is a two-player card game about building a city. Repos Production states 2 players, ages 10+, 30 minutes. Cards are laid out in an overlapping pyramid and you take them in turn, building your city and racing your opponent along three separate paths to victory.

What it actually is

Each age lays out a pyramid of cards, some face down. You take an available card and either build it, sell it for coins, or spend it on a wonder. Because the cards overlap, taking one reveals the cards beneath it - so what you take also decides what your opponent can reach.

There are three ways to win. Score the most points, build enough military strength to reach your opponent’s capital, or collect six different scientific symbols. The last two end the game immediately.

Why designed-for-two matters

Most games that list two players were balanced around a larger table. Remove two people and the pressure that made the game interesting usually disappears with them. 7 Wonders Duel has no other configuration - there is no three-player variant, because it was never a bigger game.

The practical effect is that nothing feels vestigial. The military track exists because there are exactly two capitals. The card pyramid works because there are exactly two people revealing it.

How long does it take?

Repos Production states 30 minutes, and that is accurate once both players know the symbols. A first game runs longer while somebody checks the reference card - the cards use icons rather than words, which is the one genuine learning cost here.

Who should skip it

Any household that is ever three or more. This is strictly a two-player box with no variant, and if a friend arrives it goes back in the cupboard. For a household that fluctuates, Ticket to Ride (2-5) or Cascadia (1-4) are better buys.

Also skip it for somebody who dislikes a sudden ending. A military or scientific victory stops the game immediately, and losing that way can feel abrupt the first time it happens.

A full civilization game for exactly two people in thirty minutes. Repos built it for two rather than trimming a bigger game down, and it shows: nothing about it feels like a compromise.

What the publisher states

Read from the publisher’s own page. Where a publisher does not state a figure, there is no row for it here.

What is good about it

  • Designed for two from the start, not adapted down from a larger game
  • Three routes to victory, so two people can play very differently
  • Thirty minutes makes it a weeknight game rather than an event

What is not

  • Two players only - it cannot flex if a friend arrives
  • The card symbols need a reference sheet for the first game or two
  • The military track can end a game abruptly, which feels harsh at first

Who should skip it

Skip it if the household is ever three or more. It is strictly a two-player box, and there is no variant that changes that.

Gift fit 9.2 / 10. That is our editorial judgment of how safe and well-aimed this is as a present, read off the published specifications - not a verdict on how good the game is, and not a test result. It is deliberately not marked up as a rating in this page’s structured data. How we pick.

How these were picked

We have not played these games and we do not pretend to have. What we did was read each publisher’s own page, take their stated player count, playing time and age band, check that every pick genuinely fits the constraint in this page’s title, confirm it is still being sold, and pull a live price rather than a remembered one. Every figure here names the publisher it came from, so you can check it yourself in about a minute.

How we pick sets out the full method, including what would change a ranking.

Questions people ask

+Can more than two people play 7 Wonders Duel?

No. Repos Production states 2 players and there is no variant for more. The larger game 7 Wonders is a separate box, stated at 3-7 players in 30 minutes.

+How long does 7 Wonders Duel take?

Repos Production states 30 minutes. That holds once both players know the card symbols; a first game runs longer while somebody uses the reference card.

+Is 7 Wonders Duel good for beginners?

It is a good second game rather than a first one. The rules are simple but the cards use icons rather than words, so there is a genuine learning step. Jaipur is the easier two-player introduction.

+What is the difference between 7 Wonders and 7 Wonders Duel?

They are separate games. Repos Production states 3-7 players for 7 Wonders and exactly 2 for Duel, and both are 30 minutes. Duel is not a cut-down version - it is a different design for two people.
