Head to head
CATAN vs Carcassonne
Both are landmark games from the same era and they could hardly be less alike: one is an hour and a half of negotiation for three or four, the other is half an hour of tile-laying that works at two.

Games we claim to have play-tested: 0. Every gift guide in this category implies a shelf of played games behind it. We do not have one, and we would rather say so. What we do instead is on this page: the publisher’s own player count, playing time and age band for every pick, cited to the publisher; a live price rather than a remembered one; and a plain answer on who should skip each game.
The short answer
Buy Carcassonne for most households - Z-Man Games states 2-5 players, ages 7+, 30-45 minutes, so it works for two people, for a child of seven, and inside an evening. Buy CATAN if you have three or four adults who want a real negotiation game and will give it the time: Catan Studio states 3-4 players, ages 10+, 60-90 minutes.

They are not the same kind of evening
The temptation is to treat these as interchangeable classics. They are not. Carcassonne is a quiet game: you draw a tile, you place it so the edges match, and you decide whether to put one of your followers on it. Turns take seconds. Most of the time you are building your own thing next to everybody else’s.
CATAN is a loud one. You roll for resources, and then you trade for what you did not get - which means asking somebody for something they know you need. The robber blocks a hex and steals a card, and it is aimed at whoever is winning. The game is largely about the conversation around the table, and that is either the best thing about it or the reason a household never plays it again.
Carcassonne wins on
- Player count - Z-Man states a floor of 2, where Catan Studio states a floor of 3
- Length - 30-45 minutes against 60-90
- Age - 7+ against 10+, which is three school years apart
- Setup - shuffle the tiles and start; CATAN’s board is assembled every game
- Teaching it - one action per turn, and the tile in your hand tells you your options
CATAN wins on
- Depth of the decisions - where to settle first is a genuinely hard problem
- Interaction - trading makes the other players part of the game rather than scenery
- Recognition - it is the game most people have heard of, which matters for a gift
- Replay at a fixed count - the board is different every game because you build it
- An evening that fills an evening, if that is what you actually want
The two-player problem
This is the single most practical difference and it is easy to miss on a shop shelf. Catan Studio states 3-4 players: CATAN does not have a two-player mode in the base box. If your household is two people, buying CATAN means buying an expansion as well, or playing a variant the publisher does not print.
Carcassonne states a floor of two and plays well there - the map stays small and the competition for a city gets personal. If two is your usual count, this comparison is already over, and our two-player page has the rest of the options.
Which one for a family?
Carcassonne, on the ages alone: Z-Man states 7+ and Catan Studio states 10+. But the gap is bigger than three years of reading. CATAN’s trading rewards the most confident negotiator at the table, which in a family is usually an adult, and the robber lets players take from each other on purpose - the two features most likely to upset a nine-year-old.
If the household has children and wants the CATAN look, Catan Studio publishes CATAN Junior (2-4 players, ages 6+, 30-40 minutes), which is on our page for seven-year-olds.
The honest recommendation
For most people buying one of these as a present, Carcassonne. It asks less of everybody - less time, less explaining, fewer players, a lower age - and it is the one more likely to come out a second time.
CATAN is the better game for a specific group: three or four adults, an evening set aside, and a table that enjoys arguing about a trade. That group exists in large numbers, which is exactly why CATAN sold the way it did. Both sit on our list of the best board games of all time, and we compare each of them against Ticket to Ride on Ticket to Ride vs CATAN and Carcassonne vs Ticket to Ride.

Carcassonne
Z-Man Games · A family with a genuinely mixed age range

You draw a tile, you put it down so the roads and fields line up, and sometimes you put a little wooden person on it. Z-Man's stated age floor is 7, the lowest of any full board game here, and it plays two to five.

What it actually is
A tile-laying game. The board is built as you play, one square tile at a time, and you claim the roads, cities and fields you help complete.
What the publisher states
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 2-5 | Z-Man Games, published product page |
| Age | 7+ | Z-Man Games, published product page |
| Playing time | 30-45 min | Z-Man Games, published product page |
Read from the publisher’s own page. Where a publisher does not state a figure, there is no row for it here.
What is good about it
- An age floor of 7 with no reading required at all
- Genuinely playable at two, which most family games are not
- No two games start the same, because the board is different every time
What is not
- Field scoring at the end confuses almost everybody the first time
- A run of unhelpful tiles feels like bad luck rather than a decision
- The little wooden figures are exactly the size a toddler will eat
Who should skip it
Skip it for a group of six or more, and skip it for anyone who wants the scoring to be obvious - the farms rule is the one everybody argues about.

Gift fit 8.8 / 10. That is our editorial judgment of how safe and well-aimed this is as a present, read off the published specifications - not a verdict on how good the game is, and not a test result. It is deliberately not marked up as a rating in this page’s structured data. How we pick.
CATAN
Catan Studio · Someone who has heard of it and wants to finally play it

The famous one. Catan Studio states 3 to 4 players and 60 to 90 minutes, and both of those numbers matter more than its reputation does: it does not play at two, and it is the longest evening on this list.
#ad Price as of October 15, 2026, from Amazon. Prices change. How we make money.
What it actually is
You settle an island, collect wood, brick, wheat, sheep and ore as dice are rolled, and trade with the other players to build roads and towns.
What the publisher states
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 3-4 | Catan Studio, published game page |
| Age | 10+ | Catan Studio, published game page |
| Playing time | 60-90 min | Catan Studio, published game page |
Read from the publisher’s own page. Where a publisher does not state a figure, there is no row for it here.
What is good about it
- Name recognition, which genuinely matters for a gift - people want to try it
- Trading means the table talks constantly rather than staring at their own board
- Catan Studio sells a 5-6 player extension separately, so the ceiling can be raised later
What is not
- Three players minimum from the base box - a couple cannot play it
- Sixty to ninety minutes is a real commitment for a first game
- Bad dice luck can leave one player doing nothing for long stretches
Who should skip it
Skip it for a couple, and skip it for a group that wants to finish in half an hour. Both of those are the publisher's own numbers, not our opinion.

How these were picked
We have not played these games and we do not pretend to have. What we did was read each publisher’s own page, take their stated player count, playing time and age band, check that every pick genuinely fits the constraint in this page’s title, confirm it is still being sold, and pull a live price rather than a remembered one. Every figure here names the publisher it came from, so you can check it yourself in about a minute.
How we pick sets out the full method, including what would change a ranking.
Questions people ask
+−Is CATAN or Carcassonne better?
Carcassonne for most households - Z-Man Games states 2-5 players, ages 7+, 30-45 minutes, so it fits more tables and more evenings. CATAN is the better game if you have three or four adults and 60 to 90 minutes, which is what Catan Studio states for it.
+−Can you play CATAN with two players?
Not in the base box. Catan Studio states 3-4 players for CATAN, so two-player games need an expansion or a house variant. Carcassonne states a floor of 2 and was designed to work there.
+−Which is easier to learn, CATAN or Carcassonne?
Carcassonne, comfortably. A turn is draw a tile, place it so the edges match, and decide whether to add a follower. CATAN needs resource types, building costs, trading and the robber explained before the first turn, which is why its stated age is 10+ against Carcassonne’s 7+.
+−Which is better for kids?
Carcassonne, on the publishers’ own numbers - Z-Man states 7+ and Catan Studio states 10+. The bigger issue is that CATAN’s trading favors the most confident person at the table and its robber lets players target each other, neither of which suits a young table. CATAN Junior (Catan Studio: 2-4 players, 6+, 30-40 minutes) is the version made for that age.
+−How long does each one take?
Z-Man Games states 30-45 minutes for Carcassonne and Catan Studio states 60-90 minutes for CATAN - so in the worst case CATAN is three times the evening. Published times for everything we cover are on our playing-time guide.
