Can You Play CATAN With 2 Players?
The short answer is no, and it is not a close call - the publisher prints a floor of three. The useful answer is which game to buy instead, and that depends on which part of CATAN you wanted.

How this page is funded: the buy links below are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change the order of the picks or what we say about them. Full disclosure.
Games we claim to have play-tested: 0. Every gift guide in this category implies a shelf of played games behind it. We do not have one, and we would rather say so. What we do instead is on this page: the publisher’s own player count, playing time and age band for every pick, cited to the publisher; a live price rather than a remembered one; and a plain answer on who should skip each game.
The short answer
No. Catan Studio states 3-4 players for the CATAN base game, so two people cannot play it as published. If you want the closest two-player game, buy 7 Wonders Duel - Repos Production states 2 players, 30 minutes, and it was designed for two rather than adapted to it. If what you actually wanted was the trading, buy Jaipur (Space Cowboys: 2 players, 30 minutes) instead.
This comes up constantly, and it comes up because CATAN is the game most people can name. Somebody buys it for a couple, or a couple buys it for themselves, and then the box turns out to need a third person who is not there. The player count on a board game is a hard limit rather than a suggestion, and CATAN is the clearest example on this site of why that matters.
What the publisher actually states
Catan Studio’s own game page for CATAN prints 3-4 players, ages 10+ and 60-90 minutes. There is no two-player mode on that page. What the publisher does offer is movement in the other direction: a 5-6 Player Expansion, with its own rulebook, for tables that are too big rather than too small.
| Game | Players | Time | Age | Publisher |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CATAN | 3-4 | 60-90 min | 10+ | Catan Studio |
| 7 Wonders Duel | 2 | 30 min | 10+ | Repos Production |
| Splendor Duel | 2 | 30 min | 10+ | Space Cowboys |
| Jaipur | 2 | 30 min | 10+ | Space Cowboys |
| Carcassonne | 2-5 | 30-45 min | 7+ | Z-Man Games |
| Ticket to Ride | 2-5 | 30-60 min | 8+ | Days of Wonder |
| CATAN Junior | 2-4 | 30-40 min | 6+ | Catan Studio |
Why three is a structural floor, not a cautious one
CATAN is a trading game. Resources come out unevenly, and the interesting decisions happen when you need wool, one person has wool and a second person also wants what you are holding. That triangle is the engine. With two people there is no triangle - there is one other person, who either has what you need or does not, and who has an obvious reason to refuse you every time.
Robber placement has the same problem. At three or four players, putting the robber on somebody’s best hex is a choice with politics in it. At two it is simply an attack on the only opponent, every single turn, which makes the game meaner and thinner at once.
Is there a two-player CATAN?
In the wider CATAN line, yes, and it is worth knowing. Catan Studio’s own stand-alones page lists Rivals for CATAN under the heading “Rivals for CATAN - 2-Player Card Game” and describes it as “the game for two from the world of CATAN”, and it also lists CATAN - Starfarers Duel, which it calls a reboot of the two-player Starship CATAN.
We do not rank either of them here, and we will not pretend otherwise: neither is in our game registry, which means we have not read the publisher’s figures for them and have not matched them to a verified current listing. Everything we recommend has both. If you want to look at Rivals yourself, start on the publisher’s page rather than a retailer’s.
The one CATAN-branded box we do hold figures for that prints a floor of two is CATAN Junior - Catan Studio states 2-4 players, ages 6+, 30-40 minutes. That is a genuine answer if the two players are an adult and a child, and a poor one if they are two adults, which is why it is ranked last here rather than left off.
How we picked the replacements
One hard rule: the publisher has to state a floor of two. Every game on this page prints a two on the publisher’s own page, and three of them print nothing else, because they were built for two and cannot be played any other way.
After that we asked which part of CATAN somebody is actually missing, because “like CATAN” means at least three different things:
- The trading. Haggling over goods with one other person is a whole genre, and Jaipur is the best of it.
- The building. Turning resources into permanent things that make later turns better - 7 Wonders Duel and Splendor Duel both do this, faster.
- The map. A board that fills up with territory as you play. Carcassonne builds its board from tiles; Ticket to Ride fills a printed one with trains.
We have not play-tested any of these and we do not claim to have. How we pick sets out what we do instead, which is to read the publisher’s page, check the constraint on this page is genuinely met, confirm the game is still being sold and pull a live price rather than a remembered one.
If the two players are a couple
Start at the top of the list. 7 Wonders Duel is the standard answer for a household of two that wants one good game, and Repos Production’s stated thirty minutes is the reason it gets played on a weeknight when a ninety-minute box would not. Our two-player page ranks the whole shelf, and our couples picks approach the same question from the gift side.
If you already own CATAN and are stuck at two tonight
Then the honest advice is to leave it in the cupboard and buy something small rather than house-ruling it. Jaipur and Splendor Duel both cost a fraction of a full-size box and both state thirty minutes, so the two of you end up with a game you will finish instead of a compromised version of one you will not.
What about three players?
Three is fine - it is inside Catan Studio’s stated range, and CATAN at three is the version most people actually learn on. If that is your table rather than two, the box you already have is the right one, and our three-player page covers what else works at that count. The problem on this page is specifically the jump from three to two.
What these cost
The two-player-only games here are cheaper than CATAN, often substantially, because they are smaller boxes doing one job. Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride sit nearer the CATAN price because they are full-size games. We never print a remembered price anywhere on this site: each pick’s button carries a live figure when we hold one and says so plainly when we do not. Our picks under $50 put the whole range in context.

#1 - Best replacement overall
7 Wonders Duel
Repos Production · A couple who want one properly good board game

A full civilization game for exactly two people in thirty minutes. Repos built it for two rather than trimming a bigger game down, and it shows: nothing about it feels like a compromise.
#ad Price as of October 18, 2026, from Amazon. Prices change. How we make money.
What it actually is
You take cards from a shared pyramid to build a city, and there are three ways to win: points, military pressure, or science.
Does it fit this page?
Repos Production states 2 players, 30 minutes. Built for exactly two rather than tolerating it: you are drafting cards to build a civilization, and the whole board is the layout between you.
What the publisher states
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 2 | Repos Production, published game page |
| Age | 10+ | Repos Production, published game page |
| Length | 30 min | Repos Production, published game page |
Read from the publisher’s own page. Where a publisher does not state a figure, there is no row for it here.
What is good about it
- Designed for two from the start, not adapted down from a larger game
- Three routes to victory, so two people can play very differently
- Thirty minutes makes it a weeknight game rather than an event
What is not
- Two players only - it cannot flex if a friend arrives
- The card symbols need a reference sheet for the first game or two
- The military track can end a game abruptly, which feels harsh at first
Who should skip it
Skip it if the household is ever three or more. It is strictly a two-player box, and there is no variant that changes that.
How it scored as a gift
- Easy to explain7.6
- Works for non-gamers8.0
- Group size range4.0
- Repeat plays9.6
- Feels like a gift9.2
Gift fit 9.2 / 10. That is our editorial judgment of how safe and well-aimed this is as a present, read off the published specifications - not a verdict on how good the game is, and not a test result. It is deliberately not marked up as a rating in this page’s structured data. How we pick.
#2 - Best for the building and collecting
Splendor Duel
Space Cowboys · A couple who found the original a bit polite

Splendor rebuilt for exactly two, with a shared board of gems you both draw from. It keeps the thirty-minute length and adds the direct competition the original was missing at two players.
#ad Price as of October 18, 2026, from Amazon. Prices change. How we make money.
What it actually is
A two-player card-buying game. You both take gems from the same small grid, so what you take is also what your opponent no longer gets.
Does it fit this page?
Space Cowboys states 2 players, 30 minutes. If what you liked about CATAN was accumulating resources and turning them into something permanent, this is the closest feeling in half the time.
What the publisher states
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 2 | Space Cowboys, published game page |
| Age | 10+ | Space Cowboys, published game page |
| Length | 30 min | Space Cowboys, published game page |
Read from the publisher’s own page. Where a publisher does not state a figure, there is no row for it here.
What is good about it
- Every gem you take is one your opponent cannot, which the original lacked at two
- Three separate win conditions keep games from feeling identical
- Same thirty minutes as the original
What is not
- More rules than plain Splendor, so it is a worse first-ever board game
- Two players only
- Owners of Splendor may feel they are buying the same game twice
Who should skip it
Skip it as somebody's first board game. Plain Splendor or Jaipur teach faster and get to the fun sooner.
How it scored as a gift
- Easy to explain7.8
- Works for non-gamers7.8

Gift fit 8.5 / 10. That is our editorial judgment of how safe and well-aimed this is as a present, read off the published specifications - not a verdict on how good the game is, and not a test result. It is deliberately not marked up as a rating in this page’s structured data. How we pick.
#3 - Best for the trading specifically
Jaipur
Space Cowboys · Two people who want something quick and repeatable

Two traders, a market of goods cards, and a decision every turn about whether to sell now or hold for more. Thirty minutes by the publisher's clock and about ninety seconds to explain.
#ad Price as of October 18, 2026, from Amazon. Prices change. How we make money.
What it actually is
A two-player card game about buying and selling goods. Selling more of the same thing at once pays better, but the price of everything drops as it is sold.
Does it fit this page?
Space Cowboys states 2 players, 30 minutes. Trading goods for a better price than the other person is the entire game, which is the part of CATAN that people usually mean when they say they liked it.
What is good about it
- One of the easiest good two-player games to teach - sell or take, that is the turn
- Best of three rounds, so a session has a natural shape
- Small box, so it works as a travel game as well as a home one
What is not
- Two players only
- The camel rule confuses people exactly once, and then never again
- Card quality is the ordinary sort, not the luxury sort
Who should skip it
Skip it for a group. Jaipur has no variant above two players and nothing about it stretches.
How it scored as a gift

#4 - Best if the map was the appeal
Carcassonne
Z-Man Games · A family with a genuinely mixed age range

You draw a tile, you put it down so the roads and fields line up, and sometimes you put a little wooden person on it. Z-Man's stated age floor is 7, the lowest of any full board game here, and it plays two to five.
#ad Price as of October 18, 2026, from Amazon. Prices change. How we make money.
What it actually is
A tile-laying game. The board is built as you play, one square tile at a time, and you claim the roads, cities and fields you help complete.
Does it fit this page?
Z-Man Games states 2-5 players, ages 7+, 30-45 minutes. You build the board as you go from tiles, so a two-player game still produces a landscape on the table rather than a card layout.
What the publisher states
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 2-5 | Z-Man Games, published product page |
| Age | 7+ | Z-Man Games, published product page |
| Playing time | 30-45 min | Z-Man Games, published product page |
Read from the publisher’s own page. Where a publisher does not state a figure, there is no row for it here.
What is good about it
- An age floor of 7 with no reading required at all
- Genuinely playable at two, which most family games are not
- No two games start the same, because the board is different every time
What is not
- Field scoring at the end confuses almost everybody the first time
- A run of unhelpful tiles feels like bad luck rather than a decision
- The little wooden figures are exactly the size a toddler will eat
Who should skip it
Skip it for a group of six or more, and skip it for anyone who wants the scoring to be obvious - the farms rule is the one everybody argues about.
How it scored as a gift
- Easy to explain8.6
- Works for non-gamers9.0
- Group size range8.6

- Feels like a gift8.8
Gift fit 8.8 / 10. That is our editorial judgment of how safe and well-aimed this is as a present, read off the published specifications - not a verdict on how good the game is, and not a test result. It is deliberately not marked up as a rating in this page’s structured data. How we pick.
#5 - Best full-size box that genuinely plays two
Ticket to Ride
Days of Wonder · A household that owns no board games at all

The default answer to 'we want a proper board game and nobody here plays board games'. You collect colored cards and use them to claim railway routes across a map of the United States. That is the whole idea, and it is enough.
#ad Price as of October 18, 2026, from Amazon. Prices change. How we make money.
What it actually is
A route-building game. You gather sets of matching cards and spend them to place little plastic trains along the lines between cities.
Does it fit this page?
Days of Wonder states 2-5 players, ages 8+, 30-60 minutes. A big board, a long game and a stated floor of two - the nearest thing to a CATAN-sized evening that a couple can actually open.
What the publisher states
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 2-5 | Days of Wonder, published game page |
| Age | 8+ | Days of Wonder, published game page |
| Playing time | 30-60 min | Days of Wonder, published game page |
Read from the publisher’s own page. Where a publisher does not state a figure, there is no row for it here.
What is good about it
- One of the shortest explanations of any full-size board game: collect cards, claim routes
- Two to five players from one box, and it is decent at every count in that range
- The map and the trains do a lot of the work of making it feel like an occasion
What is not
- Someone can take the route you needed, and new players take that badly
- At the 60-minute end it outstays its welcome with restless players
- The plastic trains are small enough to lose under a sofa
Who should skip it
Skip it for a group of six or more - the box stops at five - and skip it for someone who wants a fifteen-minute game.
How it scored as a gift
- Easy to explain9.0
- Works for non-gamers9.6
- Group size range8.6
- Repeat plays9.0
- Feels like a gift9.8
Gift fit 9.5 / 10. That is our editorial judgment of how safe and well-aimed this is as a present, read off the published specifications - not a verdict on how good the game is, and not a test result. It is deliberately not marked up as a rating in this page’s structured data. How we pick.
#6 - The one CATAN box that states a floor of two
CATAN Junior
Catan Studio · A six-to-nine-year-old who has watched adults play CATAN

CATAN rebuilt for ages 6 and up, with pirates instead of settlers and 2 to 4 players in 30 to 40 minutes. Catan Studio describes it as being for families with children aged 6 to 9, which is exactly right.
#ad Price as of October 18, 2026, from Amazon. Prices change. How we make money.
What it actually is
A simplified CATAN. Children collect resources and build pirate hideouts, with the trading rules cut down to something a six-year-old can hold in their head.
Does it fit this page?
Catan Studio states 2-4 players, ages 6+, 30-40 minutes. The only game carrying the CATAN name that we hold publisher figures for which prints a two, and it is aimed at six-to-nine-year-olds.
What the publisher states
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 6+ | Catan Studio, published game page |
| Players | 2-4 | Catan Studio, published game page |
| Playing time | 30-40 min | Catan Studio, published game page |
Read from the publisher’s own page. Where a publisher does not state a figure, there is no row for it here.
What is good about it
- Lets a young child play the game the adults keep talking about
- Simplified trading is the right cut - it keeps the interesting part
- Playable at two, which the full CATAN is not
What is not
- Thirty to forty minutes is long for a six-year-old
- Adults will not choose it for themselves
- Redundant once the household moves up to full CATAN
Who should skip it
Skip it for children over about 9 - Catan Studio's own framing is families with children aged 6 to 9, and older children should go straight to the full game.
How it scored as a gift
- Easy to explain8.6
- Works for non-gamers8.6
- Group size range6.8
- Repeat plays7.6
- Feels like a gift8.8
Gift fit 8.0 / 10. That is our editorial judgment of how safe and well-aimed this is as a present, read off the published specifications - not a verdict on how good the game is, and not a test result. It is deliberately not marked up as a rating in this page’s structured data. How we pick.
How these were picked
We have not played these games and we do not pretend to have. What we did was read each publisher’s own page, take their stated player count, playing time and age band, check that every pick genuinely fits the constraint in this page’s title, confirm it is still being sold, and pull a live price rather than a remembered one. Every figure here names the publisher it came from, so you can check it yourself in about a minute.
How we pick sets out the full method, including what would change a ranking.
Questions people ask
+−Can you play CATAN with 2 players?
No. Catan Studio states 3-4 players for the CATAN base game and publishes no two-player mode for it. The game is built around trading between three or more people, so with two there is nobody to trade against. Buy a game designed for two instead - 7 Wonders Duel (Repos Production: 2 players, 30 minutes) is the standard answer.
+−Is there an official 2-player version of CATAN?
Catan Studio’s stand-alones page lists Rivals for CATAN as a “2-Player Card Game” and CATAN - Starfarers Duel as a two-player game. Neither is in our registry, so we have not read their figures or verified a listing and we do not rank them. The CATAN-branded box we do hold figures for that states a floor of two is CATAN Junior (Catan Studio: 2-4 players, ages 6+).
+−What is the best 2-player alternative to CATAN?
7 Wonders Duel, for most people - Repos Production states 2 players and 30 minutes, and it is a building-and-drafting game rather than a cut-down four-player one. If the trading was the part you liked, Jaipur (Space Cowboys: 2 players, 30 minutes). If you want a full-size board, Ticket to Ride (Days of Wonder: 2-5 players, 8+).
+−Why does CATAN need 3 players?
Because trading is the engine. With three or more people, the person holding what you need has to weigh your offer against somebody else’s, and that competition is what makes a trade interesting. With two, every trade helps your only opponent, so nobody trades and the game collapses into dice rolls.
+−Does the CATAN expansion let you play with 2?
No - the expansion Catan Studio publishes for the base game goes the other way. Its own page describes adding 5 or 6 players, not fewer than three. There is no published extension that takes the base game below its stated floor.
+−Can a parent and child play CATAN together?
Not the base game on its own, at two - it states 3-4 players and ages 10+. CATAN Junior is the publisher’s answer to that exact situation: Catan Studio states 2-4 players, ages 6+, 30-40 minutes, and frames it as a game for families with children aged 6 to 9.
